PostSubject: Information: Footage (READ)   Mon Mar 03 2008, 16:48

Some people asked me what they should do with their footage or what footage they should send, so I decided to post it here if that speeds up things (regarding sending footage).

Alright, imagine you are in the positioning where you have shot some footage and you would like to send that to me for MOTW.. but, you have no idea whether to send the RAW file (the file that FRAPS or any recording application makes) or convert it.
Now you are thinking of 'converting'... how exactly would I do this, you may question yourself.
I will give a small explanation of everything.

- It does NOT matter what is in the movie, if it's an insane 1v4 you win or a 1v1 against a noob. This competition is all about editing the same clips, since people will use the same clips anyway.
- THERE CAN ABSOLUTELY BE NO EDITED STUFF IN THE MOVIE! No text, no credits, no nothing.

- Exception: A 0.06 Brightness FX is always good though. Rendering might make the movie abit darker, setting it 0.06 (yes, it's a difference) can make up for that!

- You send in Converted, Unedited Footage. This is to reduce the filesize, pleasing people that download it.
- You can easily Convert your clip by putting it in Vegas, set the Properties right. Now go to Render as... -> Windows Media Video (V9) (*.wmv) -> Set stuff like this:

Doing this, will decrease file size, while keeping good quality and make it eligible to edit it in Vegas.

Example video, showing quality:
http://files.filefront.com/blukkieninjawmv/;9771112;/fileinfo.html

Obviously, download it for the real quality. It's only 4mb.

I hope this clears some stuff up... questions about Footage and Rendering go here.
If you have other tips, also post them and I will concider posting them in this post.

Hi, I am considering sending in some footage and participating in this "MotW" contest. However I have a few questions.

You see, I record with a widescreen 16:10 resolution of 1280 x 768, which is my first problem when considering the rules. Also my interface is very customized for my own little editing technique.

It looks like this.

As you can see in the screenshot, it would not look good in a movie unaltered. But there is of course a reasen for having a interface like this.

This is how it can look after adjusting it a bit.

To "fix" my problems, I can use this technique to both crop the clip to a resolution of 800 x 600 and make the interface more similar to the common default WoW interface.

The result would be like this.

My first question is, would this be accepted? As there are quite a bit of small tweaks going into this, but they are there to make the footage look more like an original interface. There are no fancy effects that really makes this tweeked clip any diffrent from for example this screen.

I could submit the clip without writing anything about this, and you would not notice Razz, but I would like to read your opinion, as I have an other question anyway.

My second question is about compression. You want us to send in compressed footage if I understood what you wrote right? I am sorry, but I was just a litte confused by usage of "converting". A converted clip can still be "uncompressed" like fraps' codec, but with another codec (for example "huffyuv" which I use alot). However you did write "This is to reduce the filesize", so I guess what I think is right. Just posting to clear it up!

Thanks.

Why don't you just make your UI like that in your edited version ( http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/895/example1280pq5.jpg )? :S It's possible... would save you alot of effort in editing.

I don't see why it's not allowed, people can do with that interface what they want.. it's clear enough to use. They can do the same as you do, or leave it.

About the widescreen thingy... I suck when it comes to sizes, but if people use Widescreen Footage together with standard size Footage movies will get ugly unwanted borders which might make the movie alot less good and people might not use the footage.
This problem can't be solved I guess, at least I don't know what to do against it. Any ideas from the community are welcome for this.

I couldn't find the right word for it, but I'm not sure what I mean know lol ^^ I will put them both in the post..

It is actually very easy to do, and takes no time at all! Smile Since I have a black background behind the portraits and action bar, all I have to do is make a mask around them and set the compositing mode of the layer to screen. I have my UI like this because it allows me to do zooms and other effects while keeping the interface layer unaltered, for example like this. Here I zoomed in alot, but the interface is just like it would be without zooming. Also, I can "hide" the interface without zooming at all! So it allows alot of cool editing (I can choose exactly which parts of my interface to show) and keeps the interface really simple and clean, the way I like it.

Anyway, I think I will just render and upload the clip. I will submit it and you can take a look and decide if you want to use it.

I have just received someone's footage with my rendering setup, and I can confirm that it is working perfectly.
